The Penny University pop-up coffeehouse - here today, gone tomorrow
First of all, apologies for inaugurating The Coffee Diaries with a cafe which will literally be gone by tomorrow evening. This pop-up venture (in Shoreditch’s über-trendy Redchurch street) was set up as a limited time-only venture by the Square Mile coffee roasting company as a way to introduce people to the pleasures of coffee tasting. Extraordinarily, in a world of Grande decaff soy lattes with a shot of hazelnut syrup Penny University reduces it down to three options only - and even then it is only the coffee bean origin.
No milk, no sugar, no ristretto or americano, this is a pure coffee tasting experience more akin to wine tasting which is served straight up via one of several filtering methods. Not bad at all, but I suspect I won’t be giving up on my ristrettos any time soon.
